How Our Story Began

Andrew Thierry Bellucci was born on January 21, 1964, in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Andrew Bellucci was a one-of-a-kind character and some would call a Pizza Genius. A true icon in the Pizza world who not only loved to make Pizza and Italian American food, but he obsessed over his recipes and more importantly his dough. The vessel for his selection of the finest ingredients he could offer. He never compromised with his pies, and he offered traditional NYC not old-fashioned pizza. He loved to tell stories about his childhood and his heritage and his passion - pizza. His mother was born in France, and his father was Italian American and his food although Italian American by style had French techniques originally taught to him by his mother. Later in life he worked at two different Michelin rated restaurants in France, and all his current recipes were always inspired from those experiences. From the sourcing of materials to their combination, you could taste the French influence. He always wanted his dough to have similar characteristics to a beautiful crusty peasant bread.

After his culinary experiences in France, he returned to NYC and landed in the vibrant East Village; working and consulting at NYC's great pizzerias of the time, the original Two Boots on Avenue A, Three of Cups on 1st Avenue and 5th Street, and the legendary Joe's Pizza at which he consulted on expanding their empire outside of NY. Andrew Bellucci honed his craft with a deep passion for the rich history of pizza. Andrew had a true obsession with recreating the original New York City Style Pizza. It seems that Pizza had never achieved the spotlight it deserved, and when the original 100-year-old Lombardi’s closed in the late eighties, it was Andrew who shed tears. His quest to unravel the roots of New York's pizza-making heritage led him to the Naples immigrant, Gennaro Lombardi. Inspired by this discovery, Bellucci revived a dormant coal oven in Little Italy, securing the endorsement of Lombardi's grandson to establish a pizzeria carrying the family name—thus giving birth to the second iteration of Lombardi's Pizzeria. He brought it back to life in the nineties and helped revive what NYC PIZZA was all about. Way before there were influencers and content creators, people flocked to taste his pizza at Lombardi’s. He even inspired an up-and-coming director to film his every move at Lombardi’s and proclaim him the best Pizza in NYC at the time, as did the NY Times and many critics and foodies alike. His desire to use only the finest and fresh ingredients, coupled with an obsession with his dough would later inspire a generation of chefs to come, including some of the top pizzerias in NYC today!

A Lifelong Dream

In February 2020, after returning to NYC from consulting on several pizzerias around the globe he launched Bellucci Pizza, a slice shop located in Astoria.

The Secret Recipe: It's all about the crust.

What set Andrew Bellucci's pizza apart was the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to quality ingrained in every slice. The cornerstone of his pizza masterpiece is the light thin crust. Achieving the perfect balance between thinness and substance is an art, and Andrew Bellucci mastered it to perfection.

The lightness of the crust is a revelation for pizza enthusiasts who seek an ethereal experience with each bite. It's not just about the toppings – it's about the harmony between the crust, sauce, and cheese, with each element playing a crucial role in the symphony of flavors.

From the plumpest tomatoes for the sauce to the creamy mozzarella that blankets each pie, every component is carefully selected to contribute to the overall excellence of the pizza. This commitment to quality is one of the reasons why Andrew Bellucci had become synonymous with the best pizza in NYC.

In October of 2021, Andrew Bellucci had a falling out with the owner of the slice shop, Bellucci Pizza he helped create and decided to walk away from it, rather than compromise on the products he wanted to serve. Unwilling to work any further with that pizzeria, he demanded his name be removed from the awning, and with a razor ripped it out and walked out. He then put up a post on Instagram stating that he had left the pizzeria and moments later everything would change.

Andrew Bellucci's Clam Pizza

While the Classic NYC pizza is undoubtedly the star of the show, Andrew Bellucci's Pizzeria is also celebrated for its unconventional approach to pizza making. His famous Vodka-Roni pizza is made with freshly made Vodka sauce that’s spooned up hot after the pizza is baked, so as not to overcook the perfect sauce. The delectable fresh shucked clam pizza is also a great experience. A nod to the legendary Frank Pepe's in New Haven Connecticut who was the creator of the clam pie, Astoria may not be an obvious hub for seafood-inspired pizza, but Andrew Bellucci's fresh shucked clam pizza has managed to carve a niche for itself. The NY Times labeled it "life changing."

Picture this: a delicate layer of briny, fresh shucked succulent little neck clams scattered over a canvas of garlic-infused chimichurri and topped with a sprinkling of fresh fins herbs. The combination is a symphony of flavors that transports your taste buds to the shores of Long Island. It's a daring departure from the traditional pizza landscape, and yet, it works brilliantly.

The fresh shucked clam pizza is a testament to Andrew Bellucci's willingness to push culinary boundaries while still respecting the fundamentals of great pizza. It's a must-try for those seeking a unique and unforgettable pizza experience in the heart of Astoria, NY.
